5 Systems for Home School Success
With school closures happening all across the world due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I thought I would share the home schooling systems I will be implementing with my kids.
I think it is important to remember that temporary homeschooling isn’t school. Under these circumstances, we’re not going to entirely replace all of the structures that happen at school. But we can do a couple of things to make kids feel more secure and to make us feel like we’re making the most of this time.
1. Set up a designated learning space – Create an area in the house for your child to be able to focus on learning. But try to limit distractions. Turning the TV off and switching off app notifications will help.
2. Create a structure for the day – Once you and your children have identified the subjects they will study, make a schedule and display it prominently so everyone in the family knows what’s coming and when it’s over. Most kids work off a schedule in their classrooms, so recreating something similar at home can ease the transition to a different learning environment for the foreseeable future.
3. Build in outside / play time – All traditional schools incorporate some sort of outdoor time, and a home school schedule should be no different. It doesn’t matter if this time is structured or unstructured, so long as the kids get outside.
4. Communication – Communication is key. Keep checking in with your children as to how they are progressing, offering help as they feel they need it. If your child is finding a particular task difficult, be available to make suggestions and answer questions, but try to let them do things themselves as much as possible.
5. Accept your limits – Children aren’t the only ones working from home in the immediate future. Many parents with office jobs have been asked to do the same. This means that hundreds of thousands of mothers and fathers likely will be forced to balance homeschooling with their day-to-day responsibilities at work. It means a whole lot of parents will be forced to juggle.
We just need to try to do our best and remember we are all in this together!
