Compliance Matters – November 2019

Welcome to Compliance Matters November 2019 edition

Here you will find information about what Compliance Lab team has been up to for the month as well as some information we think will be of interest.

Hope you all had a great month.

Compliance Connection

On November 18th, Safe Work Australia released a report Work-related traumatic injury fatalities Australia 2018 which provided national statistics on all workers and bystanders fatally injured at work.

The trend for work-related injury fatalities has been downward since 2007 with 2018 being the lowest recorded number since these records began.

Over half of the incidents in 2018 involved Mobile plant and transport, which includes cars, tractors and excavators. In 24 cases, the worker was not the occupant of the vehicle (hit by moving objects).

At Compliance Lab, we can seek continous improvement in your health and safety performance through ongoing monitoring, auditing and review of your systems.

Compliance Corner

Many workplaces have already organised Christmas break up parties, so now is the time to remind employers that normal safe work practices are as important as ever in the ‘silly season’.

Ensure staff understand that the company policies around acceptable behaviour and conduct still apply.

In a time rich with the posting of comments or photos, it would be advisable to review and send out of your social media policy before your end of year celebrations.

Employers, managers and workers all have a role to play: after a few drinks it is easy to get carried away, but the key is to look after yourself and your colleagues.

Some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas party:

  • remind staff about workplace policies, including bullying and sexual harassment,
  • review and send out your social media policy,
  • serve alcohol responsibly
  • ensure managers and senior staff members set a good example,
  • provide food and non-alcoholic drinks,
  • set function start and finish times,
  • encourage nominated drivers who won’t be drinking alcohol.
